第三部分 阅读理解(共 20 小题,每题 1.5 分,满分 30 分)
 A
The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know
someone we didn’t know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I
turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady.
She said, “Hi, girl! My name is Rose. I’m 87 years old. Can I give you a hug?”
I laughed and enthusiastically responded, “Of course you may!”
“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I’m
here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel!”
“No seriously,” I said. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this
challenge at her age.
“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.
Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus image and she easily made friends
wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention from the other students.
At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I’ll never forget
高三英语试题 第 4 页,共 10 页
what she taught us.
“We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There
are only two secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh
and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die!”
she said.
“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen
years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn 20
years older. If I am 87 years old, and stay in bed for a year, and never do anything, I will turn 88.
Anybody can grow older. But every minute counts for young men,” she added.
“The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The
elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only
people who fear death are those with regrets.”
She concluded her speech by singing “The Song of Rose”. She challenged each of us to
study the lyrics(歌词)and live them out in our daily lives.
At the year’s end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One
week after graduation, Rose died peacefully in her sleep.

When Laura reached school-going age, the discussions about moving became more urgent.
Her father did not want the children to go to school with the village children and at once her
高三英语试题 第 5 页,共 10 页
mother agreed with him. Not because, as he said, they ought to have a better education than they
could get at Lark Rise, but because she feared they would tear their clothes and catch cold and
get dirty heads going a mile and a half to and from the school in the village. So empty cottages
in the market town were examined and often it seemed that the next week they would be leaving
Lark Rise for ever; but again each time something would happen to prevent the removal, and
gradually a new idea came up. To gain time, their father would teach the two eldest children to
read and write, so that, if asked by the School Attendance Office, their mother could say they
were leaving the small village shortly, and in the meantime, were being taught at home. So their
father brought home two copies of Mavor’s First Reader and taught them the alphabet; but just
as Laura was beginning on words of one syllable (音节), he was sent away to work on a distant
job, only coming home at weekends.
Laura, left at the c-a-t s-i-t-s on the m-a-t’s stage, then had to carry her book round after her
mother as she went about her housework, asking, “Please, Mother, what does h-o-u-s-e spell?”
or “W-a-l-k, Mother, what is that?” Often when her mother was too busy or too tired to attend to
her, she would sit and fix her eyes on a page that might as well have been printed in Hebrew (希
伯来语) for all she could make of it, frowning (锁眉) and studying the print as though she
would make out the meaning by force of concentration. After weeks of this, there came a day
when, quite suddenly, as it seemed to her, the printed characters took on a meaning. There were
still many words, even in the first page of that simple book, she could not understand; but she
could jump those and yet make sense of the whole. “I’m reading! I’m reading!” she cried aloud.
“Oh, Mother! I’m reading ! ”
61. Laura’s father didn’t want his children to go to school at Lark Rise because ________.
A. it was too far away B. they couldn’t learn enough
C. their hair would become dirty D. their clothes would be ruined
62. The children’s father decided to teach them to read and write so that _________.
A. the family had an excuse not to have to move
B. the family could write to the School Attendance Office
C. the children had a reason for not attending school in the village
D. the children would be educated before leaving the village
63. The underlined part “left at the c-a-t s-i-t-s on the m-a-t’s stage” suggests that ________.
A. her father had no time to teach her
B. her mother was too busy to attend to her
C. Laura was working hard and learning quickly
D. Laura knew little about how to read and write
64. From the text we can infer that ________made Laura stare at a page in her book.
A. her lack of concentration B. her inability to understand
C. her need to understand Hebrew D. her determination to understand
65. Laura finally discovered she could read when she _______.
A. understood the main idea B. understood all the words in her book

COPENHAGEN—The world is gathered in Copenhagen for the U.N. climate summit, but
Denmark’s bicycle-friendly capital has also given its name to a movement of cities trying to find
a kinder way to commute.
Nearly 40 percent of Copenhagen’s population cycle to work or school on ubiquitous(无处
不在的) paved cycle paths. Many residents take to their bikes year-round, braving rain and
snow through the winter in a city where the bicycles outnumber the people.
Amsterdam and Beijing too are known for their bicycles, but the Danish capital is where
urban planners from around the world have been looking for ways to get their people out of cars
and up onto bikes, an effort known as Copenhagenisation.
Klaus Bondam, Copenhagen’s technical and environmental chief, calls himself a “mega
cyclist” and says the bike’s popularity stems partly from high taxes on cars which meant
working-class Danes could not afford to drive in the 1930s and ‘40s. “Today you’ll meet
everybody on the bicycle lanes— women and men, rich and poor, old and young,” Bondam said.
The local government has during the last three years invested more than 250 million crowns
($49.42 million) in bicycle lanes and to make the traffic safer for bicyclists. Today around a third
of the population drive cars to work or study, another third take public transport, while 37
percent cycle — a figure the city aims to boost to 50 percent by 2015.
There are many benefits when citizens choose bicycles over cars: pollution and noise
decline, public health improves, and more people on bikes or walking creates a sense of safety in
the city. Fewer parked cars leaves more space for playgrounds, parks, shopping areas and other
useful public places.
66. According to the text, Copenhagen is known as __________.
A. a city without cars B. a bicycle-friendly city
C. the safest city D. a city with good climate
67. We can learn from Paragraph 2 and 3 that _________.
A. there is no path for cars during rainy and snowy days
B. citizens are limited to have only one bike for each person
C. two-thirds of people in Copenhagen cycle to work or school
D. city planners try their best to encourage more citizens to ride bikes
68. According to the text, bikes are popular in Copenhagen partly because __________.
A. the citizens are unable to afford to buy a car
B. the rich tend to keep fit by cycling to work
C. young people regard cycling a fashion to follow
D. high taxes were paid for cars in the 1930s and ‘40s
69. Which of the following is NOT the benefit of cycling?
A. Saving time on the road. B. Declining pollution and noise.
高三英语试题 第 7 页,共 10 页

70. We can learn from the text that ___________.

 D
According to a recent survey on money and relationships, 36% of people are keeping a
bank account from their partner. This financial unfaithfulness may appear as distrust in a
relationship, but in fact it may just be a form of financial protection. With almost half of all
marriages ending in divorce, men and women are realizing they need to be financially savvy,
regardless of whether they are in a relationship.
The financial hardship on individuals after a divorce can be extremely difficult, even more
so when children are involved. The lack of permanency in relationships, job and family life may
be the cause of a growing trend to keep a secret bank account hidden from a partner, in other
words, an “escape fund”.
Margaret's story is far from unique. She is a representative of a growing number of women
in long-term relationships who are becoming protective of their own earnings. Every month on
pay day, she banks hundreds of dollars into a savings account she keeps from her husband. She
has been doing this throughout their six-year marriage and has built a nest egg worth an
incredible $100,000. Margaret says if her husband found about her secret savings he’d be hurt
and would take this as a sign that she wasn’t sure of the marriage. “He’d think it was my escape
fund so that financially I could afford to get out of the relationship if it went wrong. I know you
should approach marriage as being forever and I hope ours is, but you can never be sure.”
Like many of her fellow secret savers, Margaret was hurt in a former relationship and has
since been very guarded about her own money.
Coming clean to your partner about being a secret saver may not be all that bad. Taken
Colleen for example, who had been saving secretly for a few years before she confessed to her
partner. “I decided to open a savings account and start building a nest egg of my own. I wanted
to prove to myself that I could put money in the bank and leave it there for a rainy day.”
71. The trend to keep a secret bank account is growing because _______.
A. “escape fund” helps one through rainy days B. days are getting harder and harder
C. women are money sensitive D. financial conflicts often occur
72. The underlined word “savvy” in Paragraph 1 probably means ________.
A. suspicious B. independent C. wise D. simple
73. Which inference can we make about Margaret?
A. She is a unique woman. B. She was once divorced.
C. She is going to retire. D. She has many children.
74. The author mentions Colleen’s example to show __________.
高三英语试题 第 8 页,共 10 页
A. any couple can avoid marriage conflicts
B. privacy within marriage should be respected
C. everyone can save a fortune with a happy marriage
D. financial disclosure is not necessarily bad

 第 II 卷(共 35 分)
第一节 阅读表达(5 小题;每题 2 分,共 10 分)阅读下面的短文,并根据要求回答问题。
[1] Exchange a glance with someone, and then look away. Do you realize that you have
made a statement? Hold the glance for a second longer and you have made _____________.
Hold it for 3 seconds, and the meaning has changed again. For every social situation, there is a
permissible time that you can hold a person’s gaze without being intimate, rude, or aggressive. If
you are on an elevator, what gaze-time are you permitted? To answer this question, consider
what you typically do. You may likely give other passengers a quick glance to size them up and
to assure them that you mean no threat. Since being close to another person signals the
possibility of interaction, you need to send out a signal telling others you want to be left alone.
So you cut off eye contacts what sociologist Erving Goffiman(1963)calls “a dimming of the
lights”. You look down at the floor, at the indicator lights, anywhere but into another passenger’s
eyes. Should you break the rule against staring at a stranger on an elevator, you will make the
other person extremely uncomfortable, and you are likely to feel a bit strange yourself.
[2] If you hold eye contacts for more than 3 seconds, what are you telling another person?
Much depends on the person and the situation. For instance, a man and a woman communicate
interest in this manner. They typically gaze at each other for about 3 seconds at a time, and then
drop their eyes down for 3 seconds, before letting their eyes meet again. But if one man gives
another man a 3-second-plus stare, he signals, “I know you”. “I am interested in you.” or “You
look peculiar and I am curious about you.” This type of stare often produces hostile feelings.
76. What can be inferred from Paragraph 1? (within 10 words).
