第三部分:阅读理解(共 20 小题;每小题 1.5 分,共 30 分)
A
After Christmas, I took a job in the clothes department at Graham’s for the January sale. It
was all experience I’ll never forget.
I could never understand why there were so many filings in the sales. Now I know the
secret. Firstly, there is the special winter stock; some of these things are slightly reduced.
Secondly, there are the summer clothes they couldn’t sell last year; these are heavily reduced to
clear them. Thirdly, there are cheap clothes bought in specially for the sales; these are put out at
high prices ten days before the sale begins and then are reduced by 60%in the sale.
When I arrived an hour before opening, there was already a queue amend three sides of the
building. When the big moment moved to open the doors, the security guards, looking less
confident than usual, came up to them. The moment they had unlocked the doors, they hid
behind the doors as the noisy crowd charged in.
This wasn’t shopping, it was a battlefield! Clothes were flying in all directions as people
searched for the sizes and colors they wanted. Mothers were using their children to crawl (爬行)
through people’s legs and get hold of things they couldn’t get. Within minutes, I had a dozen
people pushing clothes under my nose, each wanting to be the first served. Where had the
famous English queue gone? I was taking money and began to realize why Graham’s were
happy to turn their expensive store into a battlefield. In the sale fever, people were spending
money like water without thinking whether they needed what they were buying. As long as it
was a bargain, it was OK.
As soon as I got home, I crashed out for four hours. Then I had dinner and went back to bed,
fearing the sound of the alarm which would tell me to get ready for the second day of the sale.

Life is difficult.
But life is no longer difficult once we truly understand and accept it.
Most do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties
as if life should be easy. It seems to them that their difficulties represent a special kind of
suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, or even their nation.
What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one.
Problems depending on their nature cause in us sadness or loneliness or regret or anger or fear.
These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life
causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.
Yet, it is in this whole of solving problems that life has its meaning.
Problems are the serious test that tells success from failure. When we desire to encourage
the growth of the human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems just as in
school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working
out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Those things that hurt, instruct.” It is
for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.
61. From the text, it can be inferred that ____________.
A. not everybody has problems
B. we become stronger by facing and solving the problems of life
C. life is difficult because our problems bring us pain but no joy
D. people like to complain about their problems

attention

A. most people feel life is easy
B. the writer feels life is easy
C. the writer likes to complain about his problems
D. most people complain about how hard their lives are
64. According to the text, we give school children difficult problems to solve to _________.
A. encourage them to learn B. teach them to avoid the pain of solving problems
C. help them deal with pain D. teach them how to respect problems
65. The saying from Benjamin Franklin “Those things that hurt, instruct.” suggests
that __________.
A. we do not learn from experience B. we do not learn when we are in pain
C. pain teaches us important lessons D. pain cannot be avoided

In San Francisco recently, I was running late for a meeting, desperate for a ride. But no buses
or cabs were in sight. Then I remembered a service called Lyft. I pulled out my smartphone and
quickly downloaded the application. As instructed, I entered my location—then waited. Five
minutes later, a black Audi pulled up, with a young man at the wheel. We reached my
destination, and I transferred $10 to the service through the Lyft app, and walked into my
meeting with a smile.
It was the start of a series of services provided by useful apps. These successes cheered me.
The next day, for example, I found that a booking error had left me without a hotel room in San
Francisco for one night. I calmly searched until I found an application called HotelTonight,
which shows last-minute rooms available in a particular city. I found and reserved a place to stay,
while drinking coffee and sitting outside in a park.
What problems couldn’t be solved, with the tap of an app? A few hours later, I realized that
the device I’d brought to supply my laptop with an Internet connection was on the fritz. I needed
it early the next day, but I also had to get to an important dinner. Again I simply pulled out my
phone and found an application called Exec. It quickly matched me with a human assistant who
was willing to track down and deliver a replacement, so long as I paid him $25 an hour.
No doubt these services are helpful. In all three instances, they were lifesavers. This
on-demand economy is certainly convenient. But I certainly felt uneasy about how simple it was
to command an army of mobile helpers via my phone.
66. How is the whole text mainly developed?
A. By presenting examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By analyzing reasons. D. By giving descriptions.
67. Which of the following is True of the service Exec?
A. It enables drivers and riders to connect in real time.
B. It allows users to easily book same day hotel stays.
C. It makes quick and easy mobile booking applications.
D. It provides fee-based assistance while you are in need.
68. The underlined words “on the fritz” in Para. 3 is closest in meaning to “________”.
A. out of sight B. in place C. out of order D. on hand
69. How did the author feel after he received the services?
A. Cautious. B. Satisfied. C. Puzzled. D. Guilty.
70. What probably made the author feel uneasy about the services?
A. Cash exchange. B. Service quality.
C. Social security. D. Staff management.

A warning signal at a British airfield. It means one thing: Hitler’s bombers and fighters are
over British again. Quickly the R.A.F. (Royal Air Force) pilots make a rush for their planes.
高二英语试题 第 7 页,共 10 页 7
Within seconds they are in the air. Soon they are fighting off the Nazi(纳粹) attackers.
This scene took place in September, 1940. It was one of the hundreds of air battles fought
over Britain at that time. This struggle between the R.A.F. and Hitler’s air force was called Battle
of Britain. If Germany had won it, World War II might have had a different ending. But
Germany lost the Battle of Britain—her biggest chance to win the war.
How did the Battle of Britain begin? Early in August, Hitler ordered an invasion of Britain.
It was to take place in September. But first the R.A.F. had to be destroyed. The R.A.F. had only
about 600 fighter planes and pilots. But the British pilots handled their Spitfires and Hurricanes
with great skill. Two Nazi planes were shot down for every British plane lost.
Angry at such losses, Hitler turned upon London. He hoped to break the spirit of the British
people. Day after day, night and night, hundreds of German planes bombed the British capital.
They started huge fires and did great damages. Thousands of people were killed or left homeless.
But it only make the British fight Hitler harder.
By the end of October, the Battle of Britain was over. Hitler was forced to call off his
invasion of Britain. He had lost his chances to knock Britain out of the war.
Said Prime Minister Winston Churchill about the Battle of Britain: “Never in the field of
human conflict was so many so few.”
71. The subject of this article is ____________.
A. Hitler’s air force B. the Royal Air Force
C. World War II D. the Battle of Britain
72. What was Hitler’s plan of the Battle of Britain?
A. To start the battle in August in 1940. B. To destroy London.
C. To destroy the R.A.F. at first. D. To make German’s air force stronger.
73. The Battle of Britain lasted ___________.
A. about two months B. half a year C. one year D. four years
74. “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” Here the
word “few” probably refers to _________.
A. the British army B. the Allied(同盟国) forces
C. the British people D. the R.A.F. pilots
75. In this selection, the underlined word “conflict” probably means _________.
A. actions B. battles C. affairs D. problems

第 II 卷 (共 35 分)
第四部分:书面表达
第一节 (共 10 小题,每小题 1 分,共 10 分)
In the United States, train transportation is unpopular compared with cars and airplanes.
Most people like traveling by car or by air.
Officials of the United States Department of Transportation made a study in 2001. The
study is about how many miles Americans traveled by different means of transportation. They
only studied trips longer than 50 miles. The study showed that fifty-six percent of all miles were
traveled in personal vehicle. Forty-one percent were traveled in an airplane. Two percent were
traveled in a bus. And less than one percent of miles were traveled in a train.
Amtrak is the national provider of train transportation in the United States. In the past ten
years, the number of its passengers has increased by eighteen percent. Although the number of
passengers has increased, it is still very small now. In countries such as France, Germany, or
Japan, more people use trains.
There are several reasons why many people __________________________.
Firstly, Americans love to drive their own cars. On highways, cars can travel as fast as
trains. These highways connect all major cities in America.Secondly, many travelers like to be
independent. When they use their own cars they can decide when to travel. Thirdly, many buses
travel between major cities. Bus travel is less costly than train travel.
In a huge country like the United States, cities are far away from each other. In some
cases, travel from one city to another by train may take more than a day. Airplanes can carry
passengers over long distances much faster. People who do not want to spend long time traveling
by train decide to fly. For these people saving time is the most important thing.
