Katharine Mehta’s mother likes to joke t hat the first sentence her daughter said was “I love
dogs.” It's not the fact, but it's certainly true in spirit.
“When I was young,my grandmother told me about how she sometimes found stray(流浪
的)dogs and cats, and kept them on her farm as pets,” says Katharine. “That made me wonder
what would happen when animals didn't have a home. I felt horrible thinking that they might be
hungry or could get hit by a car.”
But what could a little girl do? The answer came during a trip to a park in her New York City
neighborhood two years ago, where she met volunteers from Mighty Mutts,a local no-kill animal
rescue organization. “I thought maybe I could earn some money and give it to them,” she says.
Since Katharine had plenty of practice taking care of her own dog,she decided to start a
summer dog walking service. She chose two friends and, with their parents' permission, the group
put up homemade posters with their phone numbers and a bargain price—50 cents an hour. Before
long they had 15 dogs in their care. “We walked two or three at a time with one mother helping
7
out,” she says. “By the end of that summer,we'd collected $45.” That fall Katharine and her
mother,Loma, came up with another mini enterprise to raise money for Mighty Mutts—selling
fresh baked shortbread to their neighbors.
The 11-year-old,who starts sixth grade this fall, has become a nonstop campaigner. Her
mother says,“When she sees somebody with a dog,she starts a conversation and tells them to
donate to Mighty Mutts.”
Katharine's passion comes from the heart. “It makes me cry to think that strays might be put
to sleep when there isn’t a group that can find new homes for them,” Katharine says. “But it
makes me smile to know I can help.”

How men first learned to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is
a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to
express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other;
and that later they agreed upon certain signs, they called letters, which could be combined to
8
represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken, or
written in letters, we call words.
The power of words, then, lies in their associations—the things they bring up before our
minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more
certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the
more the number of words that mean something to us increase.
Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in
words which appeal powerfully to our minds and feelings. This charming and telling use of words
is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his
meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move
men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or
they make our speech silly and rude.
64. Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?
A. The History of Words B. The Origin of Words
C. The Power of words D. The Future of Words
65. What’s the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The inventors of words. B. The mystery of language.
C. The origin of letters. D. The explanation of words.
66. What’s the main point of the second paragraph?
A. The connections between words make words powerful.
B. The experience makes words more and more meaningful.
C. The power of words has much relationship with one’s age.
D. One’s vocabulary increases mainly with the growing years.
67. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Great writers must have great thoughts and feelings.
B. The achievements in literary also express the power of words.
C. The real poet is a master of words and a musician as well.
D. It’s important to choose words carefully when making speech.
D
根据短文内容,从下框的 A~D 选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项。选项中有一
项为多余项。
9
A. Set proper goals.
B. Get everybody motivated.
C. Give people responsibility.
D. Treat people kindly and respectfully.
Ways to Motivate Others
68.
As a leader you need to treat the people helping you with the most respect and kindness. Hand out
your praise when it's necessary. You might not know it,but it's a big motivation booster(助推器)
when people are treated right. People enjoy knowing when they're doing a good job and enjoy
working with people that treat others with kindness.
69.
If there are certain tasks that you're allowed to delegate to others,by all means choose someone to
take responsibility for that task. When people are fully responsible, they'll be more likely to find
the motivation to complete the task. This is because,as a part of a group, they may not feel like
their hard work matters, but when they're responsible it certainly matters. They also know that
they're being held accountable for the success or failure of the project.
70.
Think long and hard about how your goal setting abilities can teach you how to motivate others.
You don't want to set goals that are too easy. Your team might reach them quickly but they won't
be pushed to become the best they can be. On the other end,you don't want to set goals that are
unattainable (无法实现的) either. Your team will quickly lose motivation because they'll never get
the feeling of having met their goals. You want to find a goal that would push them to achieve just
a little more than they have in the past and keep going from there.
Get to know people.
You may not want to be personal friends with your colleagues, but that doesn't mean that you can't
get to know them as people. Keep lines of communication open and get to know your team by
paying attention to their wants, needs, strengths and weaknesses. People are smart and they'll
know when they have a leader that cares and a leader that doesn't. They'll certainly be more
motivated to work hard for somebody that cares about them.
